There is an abundance of information available on the Internet about social media. One of the keys to finding useful information is to narrow your search and to make sure the information is timely. Social media platforms and technology change so rapidly that information and data quickly become outdated. To help you navigate the overwhelming information, we’ve pulled together some helpful sources, information and tips. General tips for businesses
Develop a strategy and a goal. Tie your social media usage into your overall business marketing strategy. Social media should enhance what you are already doing and convey your message and mission.
Develop a policy. Determine who will be updating your content and who will be monitoring it. It’s best if it’s not the same person. The content can be reviewed before it’s posted.
Leverage all your digital assets. Link your social media to your website and your website to your social media. Promote your social media, website, apps, on your business cards, all collateral and your email signature, etc. This will strengthen your brand across platforms.
Use the platforms that reach your target audience.
Know the best times to post content per platform. Here are the best times, according to SumAll, a marketing analytics company:
- Twitter 1-3 p.m. weekdays
- Facebook 1-4pm and 2-5pm weekdays
- LinkedIn 7-8:30am and 5-6pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
- Tumblr 7-10pm weekdays and 4pm on Fridays
- Instagram 5-6pm weekdays and 8pm on Mondays with a sweetspot at 6pm
- Pinterest 2-4pm and 8-11pm weekdays with weekends being the best
- Google+ 9-11am weekdays
Monitor the results. Pay attention to what content generates the most interest and engagement. What made it a success? Was it the use of photos, video, the time you posted, the specific topic of the content, etc.
Use photos and video, not just text.
Credit the content you use and make sure you are not “taking” someone else’s content.
