Be an official “spokes” person at the Inaugural Bicycle Bully Busters

September 26, 2014 CONRIC PR

When’s the last time you took a stand and had a lot of fun doing it? From 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, November 15, Southwest Florida will unite in a rolling show of solidarity, combining the love of cycling and awareness about the issue of childhood bullying, starting at Trek Bicycle Store at Coconut Point Mall.

Three guided riding events of differing length and difficulty will be offered, along with lots of other fun activities, educational resources, food and plenty of fresh air. A 40-mile ride starts at 7, perfect for experienced cyclists who crave a bit of a challenge. At 7:30, another adventurous group will embark on a 25-mile excursion. A 10-mile fun ride begins at 8 for families and anyone who just wants a little wind in their hair (under a helmet, of course!).

Physical exercise is one key component to developing discipline and overall health. It also contributes to a strong sense of self-esteem, making it a perfect activity for taking a stand against bullying, since bullies thrive by taking that away. A group ride is a natural fit for the issue, as well, in that the more people who speak out against bullying, the less mainstream it is allowed to be.

The event seeks to help make bicycling more mainstream in SWFL, as well. Clinics on cycling safety, bike maintenance, helmet fitting and bike handling; an agility course; and information/education on cycling pathways and rules of the road will all be offered.Angie Ferguson and Rep. Heather Fitzenhagen LR

Cost of registration is $25 per person for ages 16 and up, and $15 for ages 15 and younger. Registration includes a pre-ride carb-loading breakfast, ride support, post-ride lunch, event technical shirt, and an event village featuring informational bullying resources.

Riders will also have the opportunity to meet and ride with legislators to give cyclists and bullying victims a voice in SWFL. Representative Heather Fitzenhagen, an advocate for victims and an avid cyclist, will be putting rubber to the road and talking with families about her efforts on their behalf in Tallahassee. SWFL cycling advocate Dan Moser will also be on hand to cheer on the riders!
