Salvation Army Discovers “Inspired” Silver

December 12, 2013 CONRIC PR

Just before Thanksgiving, an anonymous donor dropped a $20 Liberty Eagle gold coin in one of The Salvation Army’s red kettles. The coin was given for the ninth year in a row and wrapped in a note that read, In loving memory of Mimi”. Today, The Salvation Army of Lee Hendry and Glades counties discovered another anonymous donation.   Someone dropped a 2012 Liberty Eagle silver dollar coin into a red kettle at the Publix at Pelican Landing in Bonita Springs.  It was accompanied by a note that reads “Inspired by: In Memory of Mimi donor…”.

“This is not the first time the Mimi coin has inspired someone to give,” said Major Tom Louden, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of Lee, Hendry & Glades Counties.  “That’s one of the wonderful by-products of generosity.”

This generous donations comes at a good time – with 13 days left to ring, The Salvation Army of Lee, Hendry and Glades counties has reached 45.5% of its goal of $615,000.  Donations raised during the red kettle campaign help fund The Salvation Army’s Christmas Cheer program as well as dozens of other programs that help those in need year-round: shelter for homeless families, food for the hungry and rehabilitative services for those suffering from addiction, to name a few.

Interesting fact about the coin:  The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. It was first released by the United States Mint on November 24, 1986. It is struck only in the one-troy ounce size, which has a nominal face value of one dollar and is guaranteed to contain one ounce of 99.9% pure silver.  Thus, its estimated value is equal to the trading value of an ounce of silver.

Donations and volunteer bellringers are desperately needed.  The Salvation Army of Lee, Hendry and Glades counties has bellringers at over 60 locations throughout Lee County.  To volunteer, call 278-1551.
