The Tommy Bohanon Foundation is proud to continue its mission to change the lives of at-risk youth in the Southwest Florida community through its extensive outreach initiatives and programs. The foundation recently hosted its 5th Annual Tommy Bohanon Youth Football Camp at North Fort Myers High School on July 17, 2021. Young athletes from grades one through eight were invited to attend the camp hosted by former NFL player Tommy Bohanon where they learned about a great deal more than football.
“Our annual football camp gives us the opportunity to guide kids towards the path to success,” said Bohanon, founder of the Tommy Bohanon Foundation. “We get to spend an entire day teaching kids valuable life skills, form relationships and build trust, all through the sport we love – football. These camps, like everything we do at the foundation, are done with the hope and intention of making a positive impact on their future.”
Over 40 volunteers participated in this year’s football camp, which contributed to its success. Coaches included Justin Lee, the Tommy Bohanon Foundation’s 2021 Most Valuable Playmaker Award recipient, and Dwayne Mack, head football coach for North Fort Myers High School. In all, there were 20 coaches from the collegiate and high school levels and 20 junior coaches who play local high school football that came together to coach just under 100 local at-risk youth. In preparation for camp, the high school junior coaches had the opportunity to be mentored by the professional coaches. They were taught new football skills, the responsibilities of being a coach and other important life lessons geared towards their future success.
Fifteen additional volunteers, including teachers and members of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, provided support throughout the day. Tropical Smoothie Cafe sponsored the event and provided the players, coaches and volunteers with a healthy, catered lunch.
Despite complications imposed by COVID-19, the annual camp has never missed a year since it was founded in 2017. The Tommy Bohanon Foundation plans to host the sixth annual Youth Football Camp in June of 2022.
