Our Mother’s Home Receives Lexus as a Donation for the Teen Mothers

October 29, 2013 CONRIC PR

Karen Watson, Executive Director for Our Mother’s Home of Southwest Florida, Inc. is pleased to announce the donation of a 1993 Lexus LS 400, valued at $4,000, from Jim Alba, a seasonal Naples, FL resident who found out about Our Mother’s Home through his local car insurance agent, Melanie Conrad-Brooks of Gulfcoast Insurance Center, Inc., an Allstate Agency. The car will be used to transport the teen mothers at Our Mother’s Home.

“This car will be used for transporting one or two of the teen mothers to appointments, school or activities. It is cost efficient and provides a sense of normalcy.  The teen mother feels normal when riding in a car compared to riding in a 15-passenger van alone,” states Karen Watson, Executive Director. “The teen mother(s) are more open and willing to talk to the driver.  We can have mini therapy sessions, build positive relationships and set goals while riding close in a car,” adds Watson.

Our Mother’s Home is operated by a team of dedicated staff and gracious volunteers who help provide these mothers and their children with the tools for a better life. The organization has the resources to house eight mothers, ages 13-18, and their children, provided that the mothers attend school or have a job.

“We cannot thank Mr. Alba enough for his generosity in donating the car to us,” states Dr. Teresa Sievers, Board of Director President. “We are always so happy that our supporters and volunteers keep us ever top of mind when it comes to donations and telling people about the work we do here,” adds Sievers.

About Our Mother’s Home of Southwest Florida, Inc.

Our Mother’s Home of Southwest Florida is a non-profit organization that aims to break the cycle of foster care and generational poverty by providing teen mothers, ages 12-18, who are in the foster care system or victims of human trafficking and other traumas, with a safe and nurturing home where they can learn to love and care for themselves and their children, while becoming productive members of society. As a privatized 501(c)3 organization, Our Mother’s Home raises 50 – 60% of its own funding to provide teen mothers with a supportive environment to stay with their children, learn life skills, and finish their education through its Mentored Living Program. There are no federal, state or city funding provided for the infants of the teen mothers.  They depend heavily on dedicated volunteers, and contributions of funds, commodities and services. With over 200 mothers and children being helped over its 13 years of operation, Our Mother’s Home continues to be a model for success in decreasing the rate of children in foster care.
